Joy's early career was in physiology and biochemistry, specialising in nutrition. After moving into education and then research, she took a masters degree in Information Science and later chartered as a Librarian. She has worked for Mayday University Hospital, Croydon College and Croydon Health Authority, before joining University Hospital Lewisham as Library Services Manager in 1997. She was appointed Director of Knowledge Management in January 2002.
