Xcelerate™ Health Outcomes for Industry

update

It is difficult to overstate the importance of real-world clinical environments such as the NHS in helping the pharmaceutical and medical device industries build compelling and robust economic cases.

Xcelerate™ Health Outcomes is a specialist business unit of NHS Innovations London Ltd (NHSIL). NHSIL provides a range of innovations management services and commercial support to over 100 NHS hospitals. NHSIL encourages innovation within Trusts to stimulate ideas, increase efficiencies and deliver better healthcare outcomes.

Xcelerate™ Health Outcomes utilises the existing expertise, access and insight of the innovations team to approach relevant NHS hospitals and clinicians for data sources to help build health economic studies. Acting as a bridge between NHS Trust and industry we identify the relevant trusts, clinicians and data sources, design the study, set up all relevant agreements, project manage the whole process and deliver the results.

Xcelerate™ Health Outcomes provide access to:

We facilitate unrivalled access for companies all of which can be incorporated into compelling health economic studies to support market access, Health Technology Assessment and reimbursement decisions. Having already successfully undertaken several studies within London and throughout England, we have the procedures and process already in place to conduct health economic studies quickly and efficiently.

Case Studies

Post Thoracic Closure Device

A leading London hospital has invented a device to secure and align closure of the chest following open heart surgery. NHSIL played a major role in the design, product development and commercialisation of this product.  Xcelerate™ Health Outcomes undertook the health economic evaluation of the product by exploring the cost effectiveness of the device and challenging pricing and adoption assumptions. The team examined the cost of the most serious complications from open chest surgery mediastinitis and potential savings in terms of hospital stay, post operative complications, ICU and nursing time. Our evaluation enabled the licensing device company to put forward sound health economic arguments to maximise adoption and commercialisation of the product in the UK and worldwide.

Biologic Use in Rheumatoid arthritis

A leading pharmaceutical company needed to understand the level of access and use of biologics in hospitals in England. Xcelerate™ Health Outcomes helped design the study, undertook the ethical approval process and using our well established relationship with NHS Trusts was able to quickly engage with and access the relevant patient datasets. The project was initially commissioned for London and is being rolled out across the country. Xcelerate™ Health Outcomes recognised the challenges of identifying and evaluating data sources while ensuring patient confidentiality. Through our knowledge of how Trusts function and familiarity with legal and commercial agreements, we were able to overcome these barriers and deliver results within a short timeframe.

ATcare Assistive Technology (AT)

ATcare was formed as a spin out company from NHSIL to transform lives by ensuring high quality AT products are designed and developed to meet the needs of users such as older and disabled people. As part of the business case Xcelerate™ Health Outcomes built an economic model to assess the added economic value of AT products in terms of improvements in health care, associated costs and quality of life. The model measured the additional utility or QALYs for new innovative technologies in AT compared to existing technologies. It mapped out different cost effectiveness scenarios depending on the willingness to pay threshold which will vary depending on the stakeholder. The model can be used to assess whether the particular AT solution is affordable for the individual.
