Until the merger of the London Strategic Health Authorities, James was Chair of the Board of the South West London Strategic Health Authority. Before joining the SHA, he was a Director and member of the Executive Committee at GlaxoWellcome plc from 1995 until retirement in 2001, with responsibility for European operations. From 1971 to 1990, he held various positions at Bristol Myers-Squibb (and its predecessor companies), becoming President, Northern Europe in 1989. James is also Chairman of TNT n.v., and a Board member of the London School of Tropical Medicine as well as Medicines for Malaria Venture. He is Chairman designate for the British Red Cross.
