Automated Salivary Cortisol Assay
Background
Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal cortex in humans and animals. It is a well known stress indicator and clinicians are interested in determining its involvement in the development of depression and other psychiatric conditions. Current practice is to test for patient cortisol levels in plasma. However, saliva cortisol measurement is becoming a more acceptable alternative as it is non-invasive and more sensitive than plasma cortisol. It is increasingly used to investigate the function of the HPA axis under basal and dynamic conditions in patients suffering from various psychiatric indications as well as other pathological conditions characterised by high plasma cortisol levels e.g. Cushing's.
Solution
The Salivary Cortisol Assay is a non invasive automated assay for the measurement of Cortisol in patient saliva sa mples on the DPC/Siemens Immulite® and Immulite® 1000 systems.
Key Features and Benefits:
- The saliva test is efficient, fast and non invasive
- Requires less laboratory resources and removes operator variability due to the robustness inherent in automation
