CATSi - Rapid Access to Radiology Information for Emergency Transfer
Great Ormond Street Hospital's CATS (Children's Acute Transport Service) has implemented the CATSi online based technology which allows any referring hospital to rapidly send diagnostic quality radiology images using just a web browser. These images can then be forwarded to the authorised specialists at GOSH, other territory centres or at home for urgent expert assessment and opinion.
In the transfer of sick patients from hospitals to specialist intensive care units, the information that is available regarding the patient is usually only communicated via telephone. When urgent specialised opinions are required, access to radiology is important so the best decision can be made about the patients' care and need for transfer. Such decisions are currently being made without access to critical images, which increases patient risk and often results in unnecessary and costly retrievals to intensive care beds.
This software is implemented and used by CATS, the largest dedicated children's intensive care transport team in the UK.
Key Features and Benefits:
- Patient data and confidentiality is never at risk as transmitted images are secure and encrypted. The user cannot send anything until they have a secure token, issued by the CATS call centre, for each patient record. This ensures that each remote user only ever sees data for the patient they are permitted to see
- CATSi is compatible with existing systems and does not require technical support or a change of system
- CATSi contributes to the delivery of safer and more efficient care
- It is helping consultants to make sound decisions about patient care earlier in the course of treatment
- Saves on time, money and resources especially since unnecessary patient transfer to intensive care is avoided
