CBT Remediation Flexibility Module for Anorexia Nervosa
Anorexia Nervosa has a 30% mortality rate with up to 1% of women aged between 15-30 years suffering from the disorder. The Eating Disorders Association estimates that the direct cost of treating a patient receiving a basic 12 weeks of specialist in-patient NHS treatment is approximately £25,000 (data 2001/02).
The pre-therapy CBT Anorexia Nervosa module is one of a series of CBT manuals. It is designed to address the problem of rigid and detailed thinking styles in Anorexia Nervosa, which are part of the maintaining factors in this illness. The pre-therapy module is for patients with severe neuro-cognitive deficits and obsessive compulsive disorder and obsessive compulsive personality disorder co-morbidity, with high levels of compulsive behaviours such as exercise, washing, vomiting etc. It aims to bridge the gap between research findings and clinical expertise and introduce CBT as a means of improving rigid thinking and ritualised behaviours. In so doing, it aims to reduce the length of in-patient stay and give a quicker shift to further psychological treatment.
