Stereotactic Frame Positioning Aid

Background

Prior to undertaking neurosurgery a stereotactic frame must be attached to the patient's head to which the surgical tools will be connected.

Problem

This frame must be aligned extremely accurately and its application involves up to four staff and takes up to 1 hour. There is no product on market to assist positioning.

Solution

An NHS neurosurgeon has designed a simple yet effective frame positioning aid which reduces the alignment time to less than 15 minutes and can be carried out by one member of staff. This device is a removable frame attachment that holds the frame in position but provides fine adjustment, allowing a single operator to quickly and accurately position the frame. The attachment is removed before surgery without moving the set position of the frame. The positioning aid can be used with a wide range of stereotactic frames, does not cause any extra discomfort to the patient and is easy to clean hence won't harbour infection.

Stereotactic

Market Potential

Approximately 5,000 stereotactic frames are in use worldwide, each of which would significantly benefit from the use of the positioning.
