NHS Innovations London Awards 2009

London’s top NHS Innovators have just been announced at the NHS Innovations London Awards 2009. 200 guests from the NHS, industry, government, the London Mayor’s Office and the financial community gathered to hear Polly Toynbee, announce the winners in 7 different categories.

The Outstanding Contribution to Innovation Award was presented by former Olympic Gold medallist, Tessa Sanderson CBE who commented “This year’s award goes to an outstanding innovator, who, by his own admission has said the roots of his success as a cardiologist and cardiac interventionist have been firmly laid in innovation”.

The award was presented to Professor Martin Rothman who throughout his career has had countless innovative ideas; currently the inventor has 25 patent families. In 1980 he implemented an angioplasty programme and in 1987 he introduced the coronary stent. At the time, both innovations seemed novel and dangerous yet both are now mainstream procedures.

The Innovative Trust of the Year Award was presented by Pamela Chesters from the London Mayor’s Office. The award was presented to Barking, Havering & Redbridge Hospitals NHS Trust. The Innovative Trust Award relates to the most innovations received by NHSIL in 2008-2009 from any one Trust.

The event, held at Delfina Gallery in London, was hosted by Guardian Columnist Polly Toynbee. The winners were selected by an independent judging panel hand picked for their special expertise.
Of the nominees this year, David Chilvers, Chief Executive of NHS Innovations London said “With an even greater focus on innovation throughout the NHS this year saw the most hotly contested awards ever. The judges had a very difficult task inselecting the winners for each category. These projects are an outstanding example of the world class innovation taking place in London NHS Trusts”.
The NHS London Innovator Awards are designed to reward individuals who constantly strive to provide a better service for patients whether through new advances in technology or new products to improve the level of patient care.
The expert judging panel included Peter Ellingworth, Chief Executive, ABHI; Kevin Dean, Managing Director, Public Sector Healthcare Internet Business, Cisco Systems Inc; David Gillen, Vice President, Primary Care Business Unit, Pfizer; Sophie Goodchild, Journalist, The Evening Standard and Nigel Banister, Head of Business Research, London Development Agency.
