NHSIL supported innovation wins 2010 Cutlers Surgical Prize
24 March 2010
Barking, Havering and Redbridge NHS Trust inventors receive prestigious Cutlers’ Surgical Prize
Mr. Harith Akram and Mr. Ian H L Low, both neurosurgeons at Queen’s Hospital, Romford, who jointly invented and developed a new Stereotactic Frame Positioning Aid, have been awarded the Cutlers’ Surgical Prize and the Clarke medal. The award was presented by Master Mr. Michael Pocock.
The annual Surgical Award Dinner was held in Cutlers’ Hall on Wednesday March 10th at which the President of the Royal College of Surgeons, Mr. J. Black, and Mr. Liveryman R. Herbert also spoke.
The new positioning aid, supported by NHS Innovations London, enables a stereotactic frame to be attached to a patient’s head with greater accuracy in less time than normally required. It is a removable frame attachment that holds the stereotactic frame in position whilst also providing fine adjustment allowing a single operator to effectively position the frame. The attachment is removed before surgery without moving the set position of the frame. The frame positioning aid significantly reduces positioning time to approximately 10 minutes and only requires one member of staff (previously up to 2-3 staff needed).
How it works

Among the guests at the Surgical Award Dinner were Surgeon-Vice-Admiral P. Raffaelli QHP, the Surgeon General; Colonel P.H. Gilbert TD and Commanding Officer 256 (City of London) Field Hospital RAMC(V).
