The process explained

Stage 0: Invention Disclosure

If you have an invention you should complete an invention disclosure form (provide link).  The questions will guide through the information we require.  But the main pieces of information we require are a description of your innovation and a description of the need that your innovation addresses.

Stage 1: Assessment

Our Innovation Managers will contact you to discuss your idea to ensure we fully understand your innovation. An They will do an initial assessment of your innovation looking at the need, the market potential and the novelty.  If it passes this initial assessment a further more detailed evaluation is carried out looking in more detail at the market potential and carrying out detailed prior-art searches.  The results of these assessments will be fed back to you, including whether we feel we can help to progress your idea further.

Stage 2: Development

If your innovation passes the Assessment stage we will assist you with your protecting your invention should ity be appropriate to do so.  We will help you with your development plan if appropriate using confidentiality agreements we will start talking to commercial companies with the required expertise to develop your idea further. This could include arranging for prototypes to be manufactured, feasibility studies, design, obtaining expert opinion etc.  We will also help to identify suitable commercial partners to manufacture /distribute the final product.

Stage 3: Commercialisation

NHSIL will negotiate licence deals on behalf of the inventors and their institution, ensuring that the benefits of commercialisation (revenue, PR) are shared with the originators of the idea. Alternatively we can assist with the formation of a spin out company if that is a more appropriate development route and will work to find a suitable management team and secure investment from seed funds and venture capital sources.
