GUIDANCE NOTES ON SUBMITTING AN APPLICATION

When applying for a position at NHS Innovations London, the decision as to whether to invite you for an interview is based on the information contained in your application form.  It is therefore important that you provide us with all the information we need and the following guidance will help you do this.

Preparation
Carefully read the Job Description attached to the job advert on our website and the original job advertisement, paying special attention to the person specification which outlines the requirements needed in order for you to do the job.

Presentation
Read through the application form carefully before you begin to write anything and make a copy of the blank form which you can practice on.  The final version should be well presented and it must be completed in black ink or type.

Curriculum vitae
You do not need to send a CV unless you wish to.  However if you wish, you may attach a copy of your CV as supplementary information to your application but please do not simply write "See CV" on the front page of the application form and leave everything else blank.  Also please do not bind your CV as this can make it difficult to photocopy.

References
It is NHS Innovations London's policy that employment offers are not made until references have been received that are satisfactory to us.  Please ensure that your referees have been notified that they may be contacted for a reference and they are aware of any change of your name.  One of your referees must be your present or most recent employer, preferably your line manager.  If you have been out of employment for a considerable period of time, you may provide the name of a personal referee who knows you well enough to confirm the information given and to comment on your ability to do the job.

Equal opportunities
NHS Innovations London has a firm commitment to equal opportunities and regularly monitors progress in all aspects of employment.  It is for this reason that you are asked to complete and return the equal opportunities monitoring form, click here to download. Upon receipt, it is separated from your application form and is not seen by the selection panel.  It is used solely for monitoring purposes and does not form any part of the selection process.

In order to meet our requirements under the Disability Discrimination Act 1995 please complete the appropriate part of the monitoring form if you consider yourself to have a disability.  If you require any assistance during the application process and would like to discuss this please contact the Recruitment team.

If you are successful in your application for employment with NHS Innovations London, under the provisions of the Asylum and Immigration Act 1996 you will be required to confirm your eligibility to work in the UK.  An approved list of documents, one of which you will be required to produce prior to commencing employment, will be sent to you if offered the post.

Rehabilitation of Offenders Act
Many posts in the health service, particularly those involving contact with patients, are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974.  You are therefore required to declare any convictions or pending prosecutions you may have, even if they would otherwise be regarded as 'spent' under the Act, and you should provide information on a separate sheet.  Any information provided will be treated in strict confidence and will only be taken into account in relation to applications where the exemption applies.

The disclosure of an enhanced criminal record or other information will not automatically debar you from appointment unless the selection panel considers that the conviction renders you unsuitable.  In making this decision, NHS Innovations London will consider the nature of the offence, how long ago it was, at what age you were when it was committed and any other factors which may be relevant, including appropriate considerations in relation to our recruitment policy.  Failure to declare a conviction or pending prosecution may, however, disqualify you from appointment or result in dismissal or disciplinary action if the discrepancy comes to light.

If you would like to discuss, in confidence, the effect on your application of any conviction please contact the Recruitment team.
